NSA Non-Standalone vs SA Standalone 5G New Radio Technologi

As 5G is moving in to it’s fifth generation chipset with the Qualcomm SDX8x series 3GPP Rel-18 compliant architecture, a question of the network side of 5G still lingers among many of our customers. We have already covered what 5G RedCap (NR-Light) is, it’s pros and cons and what it will mean for the future of IoT connectivity, but for the attentive reader one thing stands out: it requires 5G SA. And in reality, a lot of the promises of a future with 5G evolves around this technology, namely a complete 5G network, from the core (datacenter) to the RAN (base station) and everything in between being 5G.

In this post we will dive in to some of the so called options in 5G networking, the multitude of abbreviations, as well as the differences in technology.

5G Networking – Non-Standalone vs Standalone 5G New Radio

LTE Networking

Let’s start by taking a step back and look at LTE (4G) networking. The so-called Option 1 consists of an Evolved Packet Core (EPC – the 4G core network) and eNodeB (eNB – 4G cellular base stations). It can be defined as an SA option as it utilizes 4G from backend to frontend, and as long as you have a 4G LTE capable device you can connect to the network and use it’s functions as we’ve all come to know it.

Simplified picure of LTE Networking

5G networking

Non-Standalone

When looking at 5G networking, things quickly became more complex. As previously mentioned 5G NSA was introduced as a way to ease the burden on the operators when deploying 5G base stations, by utilizing part of the existing 4G network already in place. The most popular approach to this dual-networking is called Option 3 with it’s abbreviation EN-DC (E-UTRA-New Radio Dual-Connectivity – IE 4G and 5G dual-mode).

Worth noting is that Option 3 in turn contains 3 sub-options 3, 3a and 3x. Most of which are available in eMBB (high-speed) 5G modules today, but notably not in RedCap.

By using NSA the modules and network uses some intelligence to know when to utilize the 5G side of the network, vs the 4G side of the same. This has been around for quite a while now, and we are starting to see 5G SA investments increasing globally.

Simplified picture of 3x, as we can see here, the 4G core of the network is connected with both an LTE eNB and 5G gNB (base station).

Simplified picture of NSA

Standalone

5G SA is the final step in the migration to 5G networks, where you switch the core of the network itself to 5G so that it acts as option 1 but with 5G, now called option 2. Don’t get us wrong, it’s nowhere near as easy as “remove this and replace with that” but in an overly simplified manner it now looks like the picture below.

Simplified picure of 5G SA

The options a module can work with are typically outlined in the datasheet or hardware guide. As mentioned above however, most new eMBB (high-speed) 5G modules can use both 5G NSA (typically ENDC Option 3/3a/3x) and 5G SA (Option 2) + LTE fallback (Option 1).

If you want to learn more about Standalone deployments, Ookla and Omdia has released a report with information on the current state of deployments: https://www.ookla.com/articles/europe-5gsa-2025

Looking back at 2024 – the most interesting implemented projects

So, we had a very interesting and challenging year 2024, let us share the most interesting projects we have implemented.

Such a typical project for Wi-Fi or PON infrastructure has several parts, the preparatory part lasts a year or two before you move to the first installation phase, and then you spend several more years expanding the installations and maintaining them until the project’s lifetime. So it is key to choose the right solution at the beginning. And that is the essence of our work. Selecting and tuning suitable solutions with our partners.

We enjoy testing and tuning, but this first stage also includes lengthy and demanding certifications CE, FCC, IC, ISO, ROHS, REACH and others, as well as tedious filling out legislative forms regarding the non-use of prohibited and hazardous substances in production – SVHC (substances of very high concern), POP (persistent organic pollutants), Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances – PFAS, LC-PFCAs (Long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids), MCCP (Medium chain chlorinated paraffins), Chlorpyrifos (also known by the trade names Dursban, OMS 0971, Lorsban, Brodan, Killmaster, Pyrinex, Suscon, Coroban, Terial, Danusban, Durmet, and Eradex). There are new recently added fun forms regarding sustainability and carbon footprint. Yes, we can successfully fill that out too. And thanks to this, we helped our partners to obtain several interesting projects using EU subsidies. And even for projects in the USA and Canada, our certifications and forms went through a demanding approval process. Thanks to this, the difficult year 2024 was ultimately quite successful.

Europe is already quite crowded with Wi-Fi solutions such as hotspots and Wi-Fi connections for passengers and customers. There is probably not a single European country where our Wi-Fi modules have not been used for professional Wi-Fi connection solutions for many years. Our modules are used, for example, in trains and buses all over Europe. Of course, last year we also increased their number and added new projects using Wi-Fi 6. In particular, the Mediatek MT7915 and MT7916 modules have proven themselves for Wi-Fi applications for passengers and customers and, thanks to the new DBDC (dual band dual concurrent) functionality, they have saved implementation costs, as one module can create two independent Wi-Fi networks in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and, newly, in the WiFi6E 6GHz band. These modules offer a very powerful HW AP mode with good signal coverage and support for a large number of simultaneously connected clients.

Our proven 802.11ac WiFi 5 modules with the QCA 9880 / 9882 chip have found application in projects even in faraway Asia. In cooperation with a partner, we successfully launched a Wi-Fi project for passengers on trains in Kazakhstan. This project was mainly interesting due to its relatively large scope and duration. That is why we were forced to ensure a stable supply of these good old proven chips until 2028. That was probably the hardest thing – but we managed to do it too. We can therefore continue to offer the proven 524WiFi 600VX and 900VX pro + modules to all interested parties without any supply restrictions.

These reliable and powerful miniPCIe modules are popular for use in drones due to their long range and sensitivity. And so one of the most important orders is now an arms order from the USA. WLE 900VX Wi-Fi modules will help to precisely and reliably control military drones. The installation of the industrial version of the 524WiFi 900VX Pro + into aircraft is still ongoing, and we are also working with a partner from the USA on this.

As you probably know, our modules can be found, for example, in wind farms, in drones, on ships, in both civil, aerobatic and military aircraft … on land, on water and in the air. NASA has also ordered samples, so the next goal is to get into space! And we worked on that in 2024. Newly, in cooperation with SpaceX, they are currently testing our Mediatek WiFi 6 and 6E modules.

Several projects with Smart city applications, Smart industrial control or AI powered industrial solutions are in the early stages of implementation. Many of them require powerful real time streaming, so we help our partners with the selection and testing of Wi-Fi 6E modules with the Qualcomm QCN 9074 chip. We are also now finalizing support for WiFi 7 modules QCN 9274, the use of which has so far been limited to the QCA IPQ processor platform. We will soon publish how to do it in Linux systems with open source ath12k drivers. So that is our task for the beginning of 2025. We know that the x86 platform with the Linux system or OpenWRT are the most important for our customers for the development of their applications. The OpenWiFi project is also very interesting, we started working with this platform last year and our new HW supports OpenWiFi firmware! You can read more in the individual articles on our blog.

Happy New Year 2025 and all the best from the 524WiFi team!

A to je právě podstata naší práce. Výběr a ladění vhodných řešení s našimi partnery.

Testování a ladění nás baví, ale do této první etapy spadají i zdlouhavé náročné certifikce CE, FCC, IC, ISO, ROHS, REACH a další a také úmorné vyplňování legislativních formulářů ohledně nepoužívání zakázaných a nebezpečných látek při výrobě – SVHC (substances of very high concern), POP (persistent organic pollutants), Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances – PFAS, LC-PFCAs (Long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids), MCCP (Medium chain chlorinated paraffins), Chlorpyrifos (also known by the trade names Dursban, OMS 0971, Lorsban, Brodan, Killmaster, Pyrinex, Suscon, Coroban, Terial, Danusban, Durmet, and Eradex). Nově nám přibyly zábavné formuláře ohledně udržitelnosti a uhlíkové stopy. Ano, i to umíme úspěšně vyplnit. A díky tomu jsme pomohli našim partnerům získat několik zajímavých projektů s využitím dotací z EU.

Tyto moduly nabízí velmi výkonný HW AP mod s dobrým pokrytím signálem a podporou velkého množství současně připojených klientů.

Naše osvědčené 802.11ac WiFi 5 moduly s čipem QCA 9880 / 9882 našly uplatnění v projektech i v daleké Asii.

Mnohé z nich vyžadují výkonný real time streaming , pomáháme tedy našim partnerům s výběrem a testování Wi-Fi 6E modulů s čipem Qualcomm QCN 9074.
