524WiFi 900VX and 600VX Pro+ : QCA9880 Wi-Fi 5 Mini PCIe Modules for Warehouse AGVs
A warehouse is one of the harder places to keep a Wi-Fi link alive. Metal racks reflect and block signals, other equipment adds interference, and AGVs are always moving, so the best access point keeps changing. When the link drops, the vehicle stops, and someone has to find out why.
Access point placement and channel planning get most of the attention, but the radio on the vehicle matters too. This article looks at two Wi-Fi 5 mini-PCIe modules, the 524WiFi 900VX Pro+ and the 524WiFi 600VX Pro+, and where they fit.
Why AGV Wi-Fi is different
A laptop on a desk can wait a moment to reconnect. An AGV can’t.
A Japanese research group (NICT) surveyed a real manufacturing site where AGVs were added to a Wi-Fi network originally built for fixed devices. They found that access point selection during roaming became unstable, partly because moving vehicles briefly picked up signals from distant access points. A network that works well for stationary devices doesn’t automatically work well for moving ones.
That’s why it helps to look at both sides of the link: the access points, and the radio on the vehicle.
The two modules at a glance
Both modules use the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9880 chipset and the standard mini PCI Express form factor, so they can often replace an older Wi-Fi card in a vehicle controller or gateway without redesigning the vehicle.

Both are built on Qualcomm’s XB140 dual-band 802.11ac reference design, with changes aimed at higher transmit power and lower operating temperature: a different front-end module (Skyworks SKY85309-11), some RF circuit changes, and a revised board layout. They also list support for standards such as 802.11k, r and v, which are used for roaming and network-assisted handover.
Choosing between them
524WiFi 900VX Pro+ (3×3) is the choice when throughput and link margin matter most: vehicles that stream data, carry cameras, or operate at the edge of coverage. The third spatial stream gives more headroom.
524WiFi 600VX Pro+ (2×2) fits when control traffic is light and you want a simpler, lower-cost option. For an AGV that mainly exchanges commands and status with a control system, 2×2 is often enough.
If you are not sure, ask what your vehicles actually send. Control messages and telemetry need far less than video.
Where these modules fit
They are a good match if you:
- run AGVs on older Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) cards and want a straightforward hardware upgrade
- have a mini-PCIe slot in your vehicle controller, gateway or embedded board
- are building a router, access point or embedded system and need a proven Wi-Fi 5 card
Where they don’t
These are Wi-Fi 5 modules. If you are starting a new design that needs Wi-Fi 6 or 7, or you need on-board AI processing, other products in our range are a better fit. We also have Wi-Fi 6/7 modules and NVIDIA Jetson-based edge AI platforms, so tell us what you are building.
A card alone also won’t fix every problem. Access point placement, channel planning and roaming configuration still matter a lot. What the right module gives you is more margin to work with.
Questions to ask on your site
If you manage or build AGVs, these are worth checking before changing hardware:
- Where do dropouts happen: the far end of an aisle, between access points, or near heavy metal?
- Do vehicles pause when they switch access points?
- What does each vehicle actually send over Wi-Fi: control messages only, or also video and sensor data?
- Does your controller have a free mini-PCIe slot?
The answers usually point to whether you need a stronger radio, better access point placement, or a different roaming setup.
